What You Need to Know About Getting An Online Criminal Justice Degree

Many people are very interested in getting a criminal justice degree today. Perhaps they want to become more involved in protecting this country from security threats, whether from terrorism or inland crime. Perhaps they are concerned about social justice being done in this country. They may even be interested in tackling security matters as regards the Internet, from hunting web spies and hackers to cracking down Internet child pornography rings. Never before has the field of criminal justice been so diverse or are qualified criminal justice professionals in such demand.

A criminal justice degree can enable you to become a police officer, a private detective, a security guard, a paralegal, a counselor, or a social worker. Some people who have earned the degree may play important supporting roles in the fight to protect the United States from terrorism. Not everyone may end up becoming a Jack Bauer but there is a good chance that you may become a Chloe type (referring to the characters from the hit TV show 24).

What you want to become will also determine the type of criminal justice degree program that you will pursue. This is especially true of associate criminal justice degrees, which tend to focus on a specific area of this field. There are associate degrees on law enforcement, forensic psychology, crime scene investigation, prosecution, incarceration, and private security. Another excellent area of study is that of criminal justice administration, which is meant to prepare you for work that involves identifying criminals, or collecting, maintaining, storing, and disseminating criminal records. One advantage of working to complete an associate degree is that it takes less time to finish than a bachelors degree. However, a bachelors degree can be very useful. It delves into the psychology of criminals and their victims, often includes internships and immersion studies that involve students in actual case work.

You now have the option of taking an online degree in criminal justice instead of going to a university and attending traditional classes. This can be very helpful if you are working full time and cannot afford to take a leave to further your education. You have the opportunity to study for your degree at a pace and schedule that is convenient for you and will not require you to leave your job or family. There are numerous types of online certificate and degree programs available in the field of criminal justice, from associate to bachelor and masters degrees.
