Golf For Beginners - The Right Way and The Wrong Way
There are two mistakes most beginners make.
The first is that they say they don't want to learn anything about golf - they're just playing for fun. No need for practice and studying the basics.
The second comes when the golfer has a few good rounds and is content to play that way. He argues that circumstances prevent him from ever getting better - he's a businessman with little time for practicing, he's too old to have the athletic ability, and so on. He is content with his 18 handicap and continues a life of frustrating golf.
The time spent learning at the very beginning pays off for a life time.
Put this question to any amateur golfer who has played for many years:
If you could start all over again, would you spend the first 3 to 6 months studying the basics if it meant you would have a handicap near zero for the rest of your life?
You'll be hard pressed to find anyone who answers no.
The problem is that you only get to begin once. Unlearning what you have been practicing for 15 years is hard.
Learning the right way from the beginning is far easier than unlearning a lifetime of play.
By spending a few months practicing the basics, mastering all the individual shots, one can be playing near scratch by the end of a year. This requires careful concentration on the basics though. No single round of golf even need be played, certainly not a match.
The middle aged man who is just beginning to golf won't go for this sort of thing. He'll say he just wants a little fresh air and exercise - that he just wants to play like the other old crocks.
But here is the secret: it is as easy to learn to play well as it is to play badly.
When you acquire your first set of clubs seek a teacher. Tell the teacher you wish to learn and that for the first lesson or two you do not want a ball on the ground.
This is the preferred way to teach, and the professional will agree with you 100%. It is so rare that a student will actually agree to this that many professionals won't suggest it. Do yourself a favor and request you be taught this way.
Your swing is often made in the first week of experience. If there is a ball on the ground during this period, all of your thoughts will be on that ball - not the swing. If there is no ball you can concentrate completely on the mechanics of the swing. Every detail can be regulated and fixed. After the first day or two you will be so thoroughly into a natural swing that when you first step up to a teed ball you will give it that same natural swing - with excellent results.
After mastering a proper swing don't imagine that you have mastered golf. Continue to practiec all of the other basic shots in the same way until they are mastered.
Imagine the joy of playing your first round against a friend who has been playing for ten years - and winning. This is the difference between learning the right way and the wrong way.
