Online Social Networking And Your Business

Online social networking has become immensely popular in the recent years, and numerous people are using these sites as an avenue for business marketing. But using online social networking to market your business may backfire. Recently MySpace (a popular social networking site) has gotten a lot of negative attention from the general public due to instances of sexual predators taking advantage of the site.

So how do you make it work for your business? How do you determine which sites to include in your marketing campaign, how to go about it, and what returns to expect? Here are a few things you might want to keep in view.

1. Determine which market type you want to target. Are you marketing to professionals, or to students? You need to be clear of your target market, as well as keep in mind that not all social networking sites are suitable for professionals, and not all sites are suitable for students. For professional networking, sites like Linkedin and Apsense are great places to start. These sites have specific groups with specific business natures or interests that might be directly related to your product or service.

Sites like Ablewise.com Free Classifieds and Adlandpro.com, which although are not mainstream social networking sites, nonetheless have developing “communities” which are great for networking. It is even easier to market your business in sites like these because these communities are essentially about businesses.

2. It is important to setup your profile as soon as possible, after joining the site. Add a photo of yourself. Provide as many details as possible. The more details provided, the more people will be inclined to trust you. Ensure that a link to your site is provided, and that you tell others what is the nature of your business. Establish a positive reputation and credibility. Get others to trust in your service or product.

3. It is not only important, but necessary as well, to understand how each social networking site function. Promote yourself first as an individual, then your business. Make friends with as many people as possible. Many of these sites are based on individuals, not companies. Blatant marketing or “hard selling” will not work. A “soft sell” approach has to be taken.

Your eventual goal should be to establish your brand and online presence, and to build back-links from popular sites. Write articles and post them on your blog(s) in these sites. This will create awareness and back-links for your products and services as well as make a contribution to these sites. By contributing to these sites, you are not only building value for them, you are building value for you.

4. Continue looking for new avenues to market your products or services. One popular social networking site might have tremendous traffic; but not everyone visits that particular site. There are currently many social networking sites, and these sites all cater to a multitude of interests, topics and natures. Pick a few that are closest in relation to your business.

The ways to promote yourself and your business on social networking sites are unlimited. Just be sure to understand the rules and what is considered acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Take special care to avoid spamming, as well as blatant sales pitches that might drive away your target audience.

Third golden rule of MySpace is to always make sure your page looks nice. Nobody wants to visit a page on MySpace that looks boring and neglected. While you do not need to change your profile appearance all of the time, making sure that it looks nice is always good. This means that trying to see how much flashy, glittery stuff you can cram into one small area of your page is sure to run people off because of how hard it is to read. Instead, try to decide on a color scheme and select components that will fit together to look nice and keep people coming back.

As you can see, the rules of MySpace are quite simple and by following them, you can ensure that your page is some place that people actually want to visit without running the opposite direction. Remember, visiting your MySpace page should never be considered a form of torture. You should instead work hard to ensure that everyone enjoys coming to visit your page to see what new information and changes you make on occasion. As easy as MySpace is to use to stay in contact it will not be long before you are a MySpace addict.

That is why it is very important that you become proactive too. You can join discussion groups where you can post new threads perhaps about a topic related to your niche or post a product review in your blog. You may send out personal comments into other peoples profiles. Dont forget to send personal messages, asking them about their weekend or anything mundane. The key here is to build relationships among your viewers and your potential customers. This will also advance you to a more popular user.

4. Give free stuff. Everybody loves the word free, and your friends will certainly like to receive one too. Besides placing promotions into your website, you can also post them in your profile. Skip the bulletins. They are becoming ineffective tools of marketing. Promotions such as this can also boost your number of friends, thus more visibility for you and your business.

5. Get good referrals. It will be easier for you to gain other peoples trust when you work on your referrals. Make sure you inform your friends who are already members of the social networking site to introduce you to their other associates.

6. Invite friends who share the same interest as yours. You can actually begin your own group and lure others to join you. You can choose a category that is related to your business niche. Make sure that you stick to the rules of the social networking website when it comes to creating your group.

8. Advertise your profile page. You can visit other social networking websites, blogs, and forums, and leave the address of your profile page in them. There will always be a number of them who will be interested to know how your profile looks like.

So, they do not need to invest big money in record, they just upload their music to myspace, and some sponsors/managers may find them, and they are in.

Squidoo lenses are both free and easy to set-up and are ideal if you are still testing the waters on a marketing campaign. Investing in a domain and web hosting not only has an initial cost but you are stuck with them if you choose incorrectly and you need to know about Web design, etc.

Setting up a Squidoo lens as your marketing platform

Now, it is not the purpose of this article to show you how to create your very first Squidoo lens and I am not assuming you already have one or know how to do it either. The fact is, the process is so easy and Squidoo take you through it in an easy to follow process. So, there is no point in me replicating that here

Creating an effective layout for your Squidoo lens

Add as many text modules as you can. Add relevant graphics and video if you can. Video is very effective as long as it is not a distraction.

Add an opt-in form and display it prominently. If you dont capture your leads you are missing an opportunity to make potential additional sales.

Add a links section. This will contain the links to your recommended products.

You can add as many modules as you wish but keep things as simple and relevant as you can.

Publish your lens and keep adding to it. You can add articles, reviews, chat posts, anything you want. But keep it relevant to your topic and keywords at all times.

The Attention Factor

Recently I was engaged in a conversation with an executive who wanted answers concerning social networking in the Relationship Economy. Not unlike many executives this individual wanted answers without taking the time to understand the process. During our conversation he put me on hold three times, brought in another executive to the call, interrupted my explanations almost every time and in the background I could hear his cell phone ringing and his blackberry buzzing. When we were engaged you could feel his sense of urgency to want the answer but his attention span limited him from hearing the answer.

Most of my responses to his rapid fire questions were well that depends on during which time I was never able to finish the explanation. His objective was to start a social network in conjunction with the release of a major product offering and subsequent massive media coverage on the product. He told me he had 45 days before the release of his new product and how could he get a social network up in time. I told him it was possible but there was a lot of details that needed to be thought out and planned so that his network created value long term. He ultimately said, OK, how much will you charge me to get a prototype up in 2 weeks?

My responseWithout your commitment to spend the time planning and thinking about hundreds of related issues and interactions what your asking for it is impossible. His response was I can give you no more than an hour a day and he said the other executive on the phone could also give about an hour a day. They simply dont get it! They suffer from The Attention Factor and what I will label as Continuous Partial Attention or CPA.

When I told him that his time commitment was not enough to insure a successful plan his response was OK, how much do I have to pay you to fill the void. He still didnt get it! Earlier he had asked what I charge per day for strategic advice and my response was That is based on your perception of value, I dont typically quote a daily rate. He was somewhat perplexed by my answer and came back to the same question four times during the interrupted conversation. My response remained the same which just further frustrated him and created a cramp in his brain.

The Values and Processes of the Relationship Economy will Disrupt our Thinking! What this person didnt understand is the very essence of the emerging Relationship Economy. With so much information surrounding us and our trained passion for quick answers we miss the value of learning and creating relations. Those that have learned to optimize our attention already have a significant advantage over others. Our attention is really the driver to getting massive personal leverage. Social Networking is the means which enables massive personal leverage, you can reach and give to a mass or swarm verses a few or a small gathering. Those who can accomplish the greatest mass of personal leverage will be those that gain the most in The Relationship Economy. Those that adopt, or I should say, transform their thinking and trust in the essence of human relations will perpetuate value faster than ever before. The dynamics we are all facing becomes the Paradox of Choice, which I will elaborate on in future post.

With so many people using the largest social networking site MySpace there is bound to be trouble at some point. How can you avoid your share of the trouble? By simply following some simple steps to avoid problem users you can ensure that you remain safe and have no problems.

Tip 1. There is no reason to meet anyone online in the real world. Keep your MySpace friends restricted to MySpace. The only exception should be real life friends that you add to your MySpace page. Never go meet someone whom you only know from the internet this can be very dangerous, after all you never know if they really are who they claim to be.

Tip 2. Do not talk to people you do not know. This means instant messages, comments, or even e-mails. If you do not recognize the user, check out their MySpace profile to see who they are. If they look questionable, delete the message. If the message is SPAM report it to MySpace.

Tip 3. Never link your real name to your MySpace page. With so many people online you can never be sure who is going to see your information. It is better to be safe, rather than be sorry later on. If it is someone who needs your information then they will have a way to contact you outside of MySpace.

Tip 4. Never give personal information. This includes bank information, social security number, name, phone number, address, or anything else that can identify you. Remember, you do not know everyone online. While most people are good, there are some bad people online as well.

Tip 5. Never give out personal information about your friends on your MySpace page. If they want the information given out, they can do it themselves. This includes names. You would not appreciate people giving out your information, so respect them, and keep their information private as well.

Tip 6. Keep your profile clean. If you would be embarrassed by your family, or boss seeing the page then it might need a good clean up. Remember, MySpace is not a porn site, nor a dating site. It is for social networking and meeting friends, keep your profile page clean.

Tip 7. Do not attack other users. This means either by e-mail, instant message or any other means. You do not want to be attacked, so keep this in mind for your communication with others.

Tip 8. Do not allow other people to use your account. This means keep your password safe, never allow anyone else to find it. If you suspect someone has gotten your password, change it immediately.

Tip 9. Never stay signed into your MySpace account; this is especially important if you share a computer with someone else. This includes work, school or anywhere else. It only takes a second to sign out, but can only take a second for someone to steal your account.

Tip 10. Consider using a different e-mail address for your MySpace information. This ensures that people cannot find out your private e-mail information. There are several companies that offer free e-mail accounts such as Yahoo, and Gmail.

Staying safe is very easy to do as long as you take these simple precautions. With these 10 tips, you will be safe and can enjoy your MySpace experience without worries.
