Promote Workplace Morale, Prevent Surprises, and Get a Nifty Accessory

Another day at work, another day of playing solitaire to ease the boredom. You quickly organize the suits with practiced ease. The cards fall obediently into their proper stack as you rapidly create order out of card chaos. You are the master of your domain Youre so elated at your latest solitaire success that you fail to notice your manager darkening the doorway of your cubicle. The heavy hand of authority falls on your shoulder and you realize that this is the end of your game-playing escapades.

Sure, you could be working, adding value to the company, contributing to the corporations success. But wheres the fun in that? But its not just fun. A study by the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands suggests that game-playing at work increases productivity, morale, and reduces absenteeism. So really, youre giving the company a better employee with your solitaire-playing escapades.

Surprisingly, somehow this logic doesnt always jive, particularly in more conservative workplaces. However, dont let this dissuade you in your attempts to give your company more. There is a solution for your gaming distress: enter the Iomega Monitor Rearview mirror, available at www.SewellDirect.com. This handy little mirror fits neatly in the corner of your monitor, giving you a wide rear vista, which prevents unpleasant surprises from behind.

I suppose that this mirror has other uses other than to act as an early-warning boss detection unit. Actually, we had one of these things installed in our monitor at home to prevent sneak attacks by siblings. For those with hypertension, this could be a great solution to prevent possibly deadly jolts caused by unannounced cubicle visitors. And for the computer user who has everything, this mirror is the perfect accessory.

So dont allow restrictive company policies to stunt your productivity. Get one of these mirrors and watch your morale soar. And if anybody asks you, you didnt hear about this here.

Define Your Position: Values, Ethics & Leadership

Some call it wearing ones heart on the sleeve; others call it wearing their emotions. If the discussion is of values and ethics, leaders must wear them openly, constantly encouraging, mentoring, and coaching others to operate within values-based and ethical standards the leader expresses. Values and ethics exist in a philosophical arena and often mistaken as the same. Values explain that who you are is what you were when. Ethics demonstrates values through behavior. This paper takes the position that values exist on a higher plane than ethics.

Dr. Gyertson6 shares an insight on value and ethic sources. He says throughout human development, there are socio-cultural influences in family and tribe. In the time of prehistory, these values meant survival and extended family. Exploring present value development offers a very different view of family and tribe. Family is nuclear now and connection to extended family is often limited to the July Family Picnic. Tribe, community, is multifaceted people have small neighborhood tribes, work tribes, social tribes, and others. They move among tribes and behave differently in different settings. While core values remain, behaviors shifts when moving among groups. Interacting in work groups is an example. Consider a group of university administrators working to satisfy the needs and desires of applicants and students. Administrators work to put applicants and students at ease as they enter classes. Faculty works with students lecturing, and facilitating to grow students knowledge. The student is the same person yet is interacting with the different elements of the university.

Value deals with the worth, utility, moral virtue, aesthetics, and, may be singular or a collective of each. Values are at the core of what a person believes. In June 2006, article in USA Today, Colorado Rockies pitcher Jason Jennings tells the reporter that players for the ball club hear the value of character and good living from the top of the organization all the way down. In the locker room, one does not see pornographic pictures or magazines. There are sports magazines, racing and car magazines, and prominently seen throughout the locker room are bibles. This ball club believes in Christian values and Christian ethical behavior. A fan tells of not hearing the usual trash talking or player showboating among members of the Rockies. The leadership in the Rockies organization provides evidence of expected behavior in the clubhouse, on the playing field, and among players of other teams. The Rockies are not the “winningest” team in major league baseball; however, they display the near the highest behavioral ethics.

Ethics comes from the Greek ethikos, meaning arising from habit. Ethics is a study of living, a study in which we discover things as being right or wrong or true and false based on how we know things. Therefore, ethics is the outward manifestation, the acting out of a belief.

Values versus ethics

Values and ethics do not exist separately from each other. However, they may develop differently over time. A childs values grow from the values of parents. A childs ethical behavior develops from observing what parents do. Trust in parents grows as a child sees their parents obeying their beliefs (values) through their ethics (what they do) consistently. It is a leaders responsibility to an organization, workers, and her- and him-self to do no less. Followers of a leader will loose trust quickly if they observe attitudes and behaviors that do not match expressed ethical standards and values.

Values must identify or embody who a leader is. Values are the bases upon which leaders make judgments on what is important. Ethics identifies a leaders moral compass, the leaders understanding of good and right. Ethics are a set of moral principles.

Leaders must commit to personal values and organizational values seeking a fit between both. Moreover, leaders must manifest values in a way that leaves the observer fully aware of the leaders commitment.

A leader studies the community in which an organization exists to know what the community values. Another consideration is the ethical behavior that leaves a leader questioning whether the community acts as it believes. These observations of what a community believes and how it behaves tells a leader the scope of normative order within a community. However, organizational leaders must operate on a higher plane.

A consideration for leader examination when establishing a code of ethics is that ethics and values do not fit a neat categorization into specialty areas. Melissa Ingwersen1 of JPMorgan Chase Bank supports the foundation of ethics at home and school before applying them to business. She says JPMorgan Chase does not want to compromise it banks or bankers by doing business with questionable clients. Therefore, JPMorgan Chase selects clients carefully attempting to maintain their reputation and the reputation of their clients.

What does the above example tell us about values and ethics in an organization? For Chase Bank, the value is honesty, integrity, and character building of clients by selecting clients who have similar values as the bank. Chase Bank does not compromise their core values for the sake of gaining business. Another view of this provided by Brenda Joyner, et al2, is a sense of corporate social responsibility (CSR). CSR includes such elements as economic, legal, discretionary activities and ethics. She says these exist within what are the values of the public.

Working standard - values and ethics

Stated above, ethics is the outward display of values. In some organizations, leaders are content to accept the ethic of responsibility to shareholders. Although this was the generally accepted behavior in economic boom years, most long-life businesses recognize that the bottom line is not an ethically symbolic way to engage.

Joyner, et al, relate the work of Paine (1994). In this, they attempt to put a value on following the letter of the law versus following spirit of the law. While obeying the letter of the law is legally and ethically correct, seeking the higher value to obey the spirit of the law propels a leader to higher trust, reducing cynicism, ultimately adding value to the ethical standard. The ethical standard is a leader and organizations integrity strategy and values are the core beliefs driving the strategy.

Ray Coye3, writing in 1986 saw the need to differentiate values and ethics. In his view, there are no values for an organization separated from the collective values of leaders and members. He provides a definition of values as, serv(ing) as the authorities in the name of which choices are made and action taken. In greater depth, this 1986 definition is one based on the prevailing attitude toward values and ethics considered correct at that time (Coye, 1986)

A value is chosen freely after consideration of alternatives and consequences
Publicly affirmed, cherished, and prized
Pattern of action that is consistent and repeated

Conclusion

Values exist at the core of our nature; they are our core belief system. Ethics, our behavior, reveal our values within an operating environment. If we say we cherish (value) our children but behave abusively, value and ethical behavior are incongruent. Within a leadership role, the same is true of our attitude toward workers. Recent history of organizational failure adds to common knowledge of how personal greed over the expressed organizational values ruin business and, worse, the faith workers have in the business and leaders.

Not all organizations are the Colorado Rockies Baseball Club, but trends start one person and one organization at a time. Be a trend setter.

The Rip-off Continues

There was this company that was called Ecoenergizer, that started up shortly after the Texas Attorney General shut down Bioperformance (Bioper. in my option was one of the better products on the market at that time that worked really well) because the Attorney General claimed that the product was nothing but moth balls. This in my opinion is BS because I used it in my truck for 15,000 miles and got good gas mileage with that fuel Saver product. It worked well with gasoline and better with diesel fuel. The reason I mention BP is most of the people that were in BP moved over to Eco as founders. This should have been a red light right there about the company itself.

Eco claimed to have a product that worked first time every time, and maybe they did but they wound up with a product that didnt work at all. It was a fuel saver additive that was to work with gasoline or diesel fuels giving you great fuel savings. For me it did nothing at all to save fuel or saving money

Some how this company named GZ got hold of personal information from Ecoenergizer and GZ started taking double draws for auto shipments from the distributors checking account, myself being one of these people. After calling Eco and complaining, we were told that GZ had glitches in their software and the problem was being fixed and the extra draw of funds would be returned. I was told by the phone operator the company GZ is short for Green Zap, I called GZ and they verified that was correct that I should fax them my information and they would correct the problem and give me a quick refund. If you call today you will not even get a human to answer any of their phones.

After Ecoenergizer was forced to close its doors, GZ continued robbing my account for 2 months forcing me to close my account at the bank. I was one of the lucky ones as several of my friends 3 to be exact got their accounts robbed from January to May. But the real kicker is they just didnt take one draw a month but two or three draws a month. Each draw was around 65.00 dollars for a total of $ 195.00 a month to a company that is out of business.

GZ also has another company called GM and it alternates these draws using first the one name and then takes another draw out using the second name. Oh by the way I mentioned earlier that I was smart enough to close my checking account and open another one so they could not make any more withdraws from it. Well that worked for about 2 months and some how these crooks got my new account numbers and withdrew 65.00 out of that account on the 15th of May. On the back of the forged check the name was Mazumah-EcoPay.
They are using GZ, GM and now Mazumah to steal money from checking accounts. If you are one of these people being robbed you need to go to your bank and file fraud charges so these people will be brought to justice. I checked out the information and believe they are located in California, so you need to contact the Attorney General and better business bureau and file a complaint.

If you are interested in saving fuel you can find some good fuel saver additives on the market. They really do work, some work better on saving fuel more the others. They treat gasoline and some treat diesel fuel. They not only fuel savers but can clean you engine, lube the upper end, and reduce emissions. One of the better fuel saver products that I have had the best success with is the All IN 1 product found at www.ecosavesfuel.com or www.libertyfueldirect.com. So do not hesitate in putting this fuel saver in you gasoline it will not damage you vehicle.

Discover a New Easy to use Product with Proven Results to Save You Money, that comes with a Guarantee and does what it claims to do. http://www.ecosavesfuel.com

Casting Stones

There has been much written about the life and death of Ken Lay since he passed away earlier this week. I have long made it a point not to sit in judgment of others as it is very difficult to properly connect the dots from afar. It is my belief that there are indeed at least two sides to every story and that what often times appears in the media as hard news can actually be editorial commentary that may or may not portray the reality of a given situation. Furthermore, just knowing someone who knows someone will rarely even provide you with accurate information relating to the actual events of a situation especially one veiled in controversy.

Regardless of how you feel about Mr. Lay I was truly disheartened at many of the things that I read relating to the death. He was after all more than a businessmanhe was a human being who was a husband, father, grandfather, church member and was active in his community. I always find it tragic when peoples lives are reduced to gossip and innuendo. Humans are imperfect creatures and I have yet to come across any business leader who cant rattle off several decisions that they wish they hadnt made. It just so happens that some mistakes are more public than others and for most people it is much easier to point the finger at those who have been in the spotlight rather than to deal with their own private indiscretions.

OK, Ill step down from my soap box now and provide you with the perspective of others. Ive read several different pieces written about Mr. Lay over the past few days, but I believe the following three individuals cover the topic at hand from every angle. While the comments below specifically address the life of Ken Lay, I would encourage you to take a step back and read the following commentary with the bigger picture in mindAs you read the following comments think about your perspective on people as well as about how you choose to view life in general:

Comment #1, obviously written by a critic of Mr. Lay:

Lay had recently been convicted of a plethora of felonies, and was staring at the realization that he would most likely be spending the rest of his life in jail. Obviously, this news makes that scenario moot, and Im sure that there are numerous lawyers, jurors, and reporters who feel like they just wasted a good chunk of their lives during the recent trials.
The mainstream media seems to be flirting with turning Kenny-Boy into a martyr, almost portraying him as the victim of a stressful trial and prosecution. I believe this to be total crap. Whether Lay knew about every single corrupt practice at Enron or not, and I believe that he did, his company screwed over a ton of people, and as the head of the corporation the blame must fall on his shoulders. His rise from very poor beginnings in my home state, graduating from my alma mater, and eventually becoming the head of a major energy company are certainly commendable and impressive. The downfall of that fraudulent and crooked company, however, was criminal, and Lay deserved everything that he got. Its a damn shame that hes dead, because seeing him led away to prison might have given those that were burned by his sham of a company some peace.

Comment #2, obviously written by someone who knew and respected Mr. Lay that provides the flip side of opinion #1 above:

Ken Lay was a deacon at FMC Houston. There he chose to serve the homeless communion each Sunday. There he befriended the poor. There he gave money for food, clothing, and shelter. His gifts were with his heart. People who knew this gentle man would not recognize him by the medias descriptions.
Ken returned to Enron to save the company from problems. He did not know Andy Fastow, the CFO was lying to investors with creative accounting. Why would he come back to a company he foundedand take up and put on the mantle of a conspiracy that outdated him? Ken had a margin call.an order from the bank to sell his Enron stock, because of declining capital value. That is why he sold the stock. Ken believed in the company, believed what Fastow was telling him.

Please go to Ken Lay info.com and read the court transcripts, and view the meetings in which he is accused of touting Enron stock to investors. In those meetings he is straightforward, honest, and tells the accounting dept. Vanilla is just finemeaningas I come back to lead, we need no creative accounting. Please dont take your view of Ken from newspaper reports and a jury that did not understand finance.

Comment #3, this opinion taken from the New York Times and falls somewhere between comments 1 & 2 above:

Mr. Lay was fairly convicted of his crimes, but he was also a father and grandfather, whose family mourns his passing. He was headed for the penitentiary, but that did not have to be the end for him. He would have had an opportunity to use his personal skills to help other prisoners. And at 64 years, he might have had another shot at that third act after all. Michael Milken has devoted much of his resources to medical research since serving his sentence. What Ken Lay might have done we will never know. Chances are it would have been interesting.

Wrongdoing is certainly wrongdoing and good intentions dont justify deviant behavior. That being said, experience tells me that there is probably some truth in all of the above statements, but the bigger issue is not how we feel about Mr. Lay, but how we treat other individuals in generalduring both the best of times and in worst of times. Dont allow yourself to be a fair weather friend or a gossipRather understand that most of us are not privy to the inner thoughts of others and their motivations. We need to keep in mind that all people make mistakes and that mistakes dont necessarily make you evil they just make you human.

Corporate Ethics - Ensuring Business Stability

For businesses to reach financial stability, good morale and client satisfaction, corporate ethics must be a guiding policy for all involved.

Have you ever heard of the old saying with friends like that, who needs enemies? That is just the case where employees, managers or others working in a business are jeopardizing corporate ethics. Many corporations entrust great confidential, important issues and financial responsibilities to employees that could destroy not only their business, but also their customers. If the employees of a business are not ethical and loyal the results can be devastating.

Corporate ethics has come to the surface over the past several years with many fraudulent transactions. When managers are skimming off the top or conducting unethical actions with shareholders, customers or other employees it is sometimes difficult to detect. Others such as employees may keep quite about what they know for fear of losing their job or worse. In the past it has been so bad that those practicing the criminal or unethical behavior have threatened to hurt the employee if they speak up. Of course there is a whistle blowers law for protection, but law enforcement can not with them 24/7. Many of these people have families and fear not only for themselves, but also their families.

The business itself can suffer from the loss of clients/customers, financial issues and risk having to shut down operations when employees lack corporate ethics. Theft is not the only problem or behavior that can risk the businesses stability either. The treatment of clients/customers, their personal information and business dealings can also cause detriment to the business. That is the exact reason that many corporations have been implementing ethics training for all employees. There are many companies and individuals that will work on sight to teach employees and managers how to remain ethical, report violations and not fear in doing so. These topics may seem black or white, but they are often not that easy. There are several different issues that are commonly feared by those blowing the whistle. This person that they are telling on may be a family member, friend or boss and that can make the decision that much harder.

Corporations should make sure that they have a clear cut policy about reporting illegal or unethical activity. It is important that employees understand that by doing the right thing that they will not be sold out or punished for protecting the business. Low level employees are not the only ones that jeopardize corporate ethics, and the corporation should keep that in mind. This can be handled by requiring all employees to undergo ethics training and having a reporting system for them all, not only lower level employees. There should always be a second in command that employees can bypass their immediate supervisor to ensure they always have someone to report to. That way there is less of a chance of an employee remaining quite.

5 Things You Can Do to Advocate Mutual Respect in the Workplace or at Home

The funny thing about mutual respect is that you cant control it. Sure, you can control whether or not you exercise on a regular basis, whether you control your temper, or whether or not you express respect to others, but mutual respect implies that two or more persons have respect for each other, and as unfortunate as it may seem at times, you can never control when and where others decide to show you respect. So, perhaps the question should be: How can I encourage mutual respect?

Read the five tips below and learn what you can do to create an environment that is more conducive to manifestations of mutual respect.

1) Encourage Mutual Respect with Time

Its painfully obvious that we simply dont get along with some personalities, but it is also fairly obvious that the more you get to know someone the more you begin to understand them and in turn, respect them. After those primary bad impressions sizzle off you might even make some surprising friendships.

If you truly want to foster mutual respect with people who may be hard to get along with, you are going to have to buckle down and set aside time to be with that person, work with that person, talk with that person and even play with that person. You might have to grit your teeth now and again but in the end you will gradually start to realize that his or her personality or point of view arent that hard to get along with after all.

2) Encourage Mutual Respect with Patience

Patience, in my opinion, is a combination of empathy and selflessness. In other words, patience is about other people, which is why patience is such a hard virtue to master. After all, who wants to spend time thinking about other people when we are so busy plowing through our own agendas? The truth is that the best people, the smartest people and the most successful people take a good long look at other people and express empathy and selflessness towards the people they associate with. Sincerity of action is also very important. A person who is simply going through the motions of being selfless (i.e. taking more time to talk with someone) will simply appear to be a fake if he or she doesnt show sincerity.

3) Encourage Mutual Respect by Listening

Listening is one of the greatest manifestations of respect. Even if you think the ideas of a co-worker or acquantaince are way off the mark, listen carefully to what he or she is saying and then ask questions that truly make you curious. For instance, if your co-worker wants to raise the marketing budget and you think that is the stupidest idea you have heard during your entire career, dont express your feelings, or your own thoughts regarding the supposed stupidity of the suggestion. Instead, start asking questions like How will the company have enough to pay for the new hires in two months? or What do you think about our current marketing strategies? Do you think we should improve those first? You might find that he or she has some great ideas that were being poorly expressed because no one took the time to analyze them more fully.

4) Encourage Mutual Respect by Laughing

If you laugh with others, you can relax, and when you relax and help others to relax as well, more effective communication takes place every second. Take time to analyze your opponents sense of humor and be patient with him or her. Try to find common interests, or laugh about experiences that youve already had together without using humor that he or she might find offensive.

5) Maintain Mutual Respect with Honesty

Once a person trusts you and starts to show you respect, it doesnt mean you will have his or her respect for a lifetime. In order to maintain mutual respect you have to be honest with that person even when it is extremely uncomfortable to do so, and you have to be honest every day–not just on the days that are convenient for you. A dishonest businessman or professional is truly no businessman or professional at all. If you are honest, you will become better at everything you do and others will crave your mutual respect.

Do Manufacturing Processes Make it Impossible for Food and Drug Companies to Create Healthy Products

Many believe that the manufacturing and food processing systems make it nearly impossible for large Corporations to produce healthy foods and drugs, but is this really true and is it fair to condemn our food distribution system? What if they did not exist? How do you feed 5.5 Million in Houston, 13.5 Million in Southern California and 12 million people in NYC? And what about sending food all over the World like we do too?

No not necessarily. The most efficient processes also allow them to make better products for less cost. They might often choose to make crappy products some times to prop up shareholders equity and quarterly profits, but the consumers can also choose not to buy them right? No one is holding a gun to peoples heads making them buy processed foods.

Some will say that in these processed foods and drugs are chemicals, which are indeed toxic. Well, sure there are some chemicals which are not good for the bio-systems in everything from Soft Drinks to Frozen TV Dinners, but also realize that many of these chemicals are needed to prevent disease, spoilage and make them taste right after thawing out and being re-heated.

Processed foods are an issue for human consumption and yes there is junk in lots of it. No one can deny that. Of course other issues include the depleted soil too, pesticides, polluted water for animals and crops. Now also realize that some of these chemicals allow the foods to be insta-frozen, reheated, microwaved, sustain travel time spoilage issues, prevent bacteria, etc. too.

So there is a catch 22 involved also. And in the end we ought to be thankful for the abundance of food available in our nation, even if we abuse this privilege by eating way too much; judging by the chubbiness of the average American. I hope this article propelled thought in 2007.

Franchisor Ethics; Do You Have the Right to Sell Your Concept as a Franchise?

Most reasonable people will a still that if a franchisor is selling franchised outlets to the public then they have a viable business concept that is profitable. However, this may not always be the case and to assume this is risky if you are a franchise buyer. I would agree that if you are a franchisor and you have perfected your business model then absolutely you have the right to sell it to others to help them achieve their American dream of owning their own company or franchised outlet.

Although as a retired Franchisor and now consultants I have in the past had new franchisor entrants want me to consult them and I ask them how long they have been in business and they have maybe 3-years total including the day they got their business license before opening? You think to yourself what? How can anybody and thickly with two sell franchises when they have not perfected their own business or prototype model?

But then comes the real kicker and one, which just makes me cringe as a franchisor consultant; then these would be Franchisors tell me when I ask how much capital they have they say that they have approximately $35,000 available.

This is a scary thought indeed; why you ask, well it takes a million really to franchise a concept and you burn thru it fairly quickly unless you do not mind eating Top Ramen, putting in lots of hours and treating the money like you earned it washing dishes at $5.15 per hour. If you are thinking about franchising your current business please consider all this in 2006.

Driving Home the Culture of Honesty

I accompanied a visiting friend from my apartment in Singapore to a taxi waiting downstairs.

He climbed into the back seat and promptly sat on a wallet left behind by the previous passenger.

My friend looked inside the wallet and found money, credit cards and personal identification. I suggested taking the wallet upstairs right away to call the owner. The taxi driver allowed me to copy down the necessary informationbut he wouldnt let the wallet out of his sight.

He did not speak English well, but he made his message very clear. My duty, he gestured to explain. She left wallet in my taxi. I must report to company right away. Then I must return the wallet!

This culture of honesty and personal responsibility deserves an honorable mention. Every year Singapore taxi drivers return hundreds of books, wallets and packages accidentally left behind by passengers.

The drivers consider it a matter of honor to return the items in person. Taxi companies consider it a commendable action and duly note the deed in a drivers permanent record.

Bravo for the culture surrounding, and supporting, the taxi drivers of Singapore.

Work From Home Plans: System or Scam?

More than likely you have seen them cropping up all over the internet: work from home schemes promising participants vast sums of money for selling a product, stuffing envelopments, clicking ads, making phone calls, etc. The plans are as varied as they are innovative. Unfortunately, many are scams meant to extract cash from your wallet and certain to leave you feeling miserable and stupid. So, just how can you make sure that a work from home plan is legitimate? By continuing to read on for some suggestions to help you avoid being cheated.

Better Business Bureau Check with your local Better Business Bureau {BBB} to determine whether the company has had any complaints levied against it. If it is an out of state concern, check with the BBB in the area [state] where the company is based.

State Attorney Generals Office — Every state has an Office of the Attorney General and in most cases it is this office that is tasked with investigating complaints against companies. Some states allocate this responsibility to their Bureau of Consumer Affairs agency or similar department.

Online Forums, Blogs, etc. Google a search on the internet for the companys name and narrow the results further by including negative words such as complaint, scam, judgment, etc. If a company is up to no good, likely that information has been published somewhere. Caution: too much praise about a company could be a company plant placed online to create a positive spin about their operation. Conversely, bad news could be a single disgruntled person. Get as much additional and independent information before making a determination whether something you read online is actually true.

Personal Investment — If you have to pay for the product, i.e. to receive a list of companies providing information work information, etc. this should be a warning flag to you. Any outlay of cash on your part should raise some concern.

MLM — Some work at home businesses are nothing more than multi level marketing [MLM] schemes. This means you make a percentage of the sales of people you bring in to the business below you. Not all MLM schemes are illegal…unethical may be another matter!

In all, exercise extreme caution before agreeing to any work from home plan. If a work from home plan sounds too good to be true, than likely it is false. Ask hard questions and do not sign a contract before letting a legal professional [of your choice] review the plan.
